PhD in the development of “Novel Electron Accepting Molecules for Organic and Tin Perovskite Photovoltaics”

Applications are invited for a fully funded 4 year PhD in chemistry focused on the development of new electron accepting molecules for use in organic and tin perovskite photovoltaics. Photovoltaic devices convert sunlight directly into electricity and will play an increasingly major role in meeting humanity’s energy needs in the coming decades. Organic and tin perovskite photovoltaics are two classes of emerging photovoltaic that offer the possibility of high performance together with sustainability in terms of the materials and processes used to fabricate the devices. One of the keys to achieving their full potential as a source of renewable electricity is the development of suitable electron accepting / electron transporting molecules, which is the focus of the proposed PhD project. The PhD student will spend the first 2 years of the project working under the supervision of Dr Thanh-Tuân Bui at CY Cergy Paris Université in Paris, synthesising and characterising new electron accepting molecules, before moving to the laboratory of Prof. Ross Hatton at the University of Warwick in the heart of England, to undertake the final two years of the project. The latter half the project will focus on testing the new electron accepting molecules in organic and tin perovskite photovoltaic devices. This project is a truly interdisciplinary research training opportunity spanning molecular design, organic synthesis methodologies and photovoltaic device fabrication and characterisation.
